Circular Economy is talked about and even practiced for the environmental Protection . But what about circular dilemma? This is what we are faced with. Consider this scenario: Warming world needs cooling the habitats that include residential and commercial buildings and also cooling of food to keep quality and avoiding the waste. Cooling needs energy that comes from fossil fuel . Fossil Fuels cause emissions. The emissions causes Warming. Warming needs further cooling. Circular dilemma continues.
It is no longer a imaginary scenario. It is present reality. The technologists and scientists are developing the models to find out the cooling required, costs involved and alternatives to fossil fuel based energy needs for cooling. As the population grows, population already crossed 8 billion , as the world gets warmer, and as the percent of population affording cooling devices increase the dangerous circular feedback loop gets more circular!
AI is capable to carry out analyses and future predictions to allow decision-makers and stakeholders to accomplish climate-resilient and sustainable development goals. Such analysis needs to consider economic growth , purchasing power, space , warming, and also behaviour change and energy efficiency efforts. As per UNEP report released in November 2022, despite an increase in energy efficiency investment and lower energy intensity, the building and construction sector’s energy consumption and CO2 emissions have rebounded from the COVID-19 pandemic to an all-time high. Building and construction sector accounted for over 34 per cent of energy demand .In 2021, investments in building energy efficiency increased by 16% to USD 237 billion, but growth in floor space outpaced efficiency efforts. 2021 operational energy-related CO2 emissions from buildings were up 5 per cent over 2020 and 2 per cent over the pre-pandemic peak in 2019.
The UNEP reports calls for governments to set targets and strategies towards a sustainable, zero-carbon and resilient buildings and construction sector, increase investment in energy efficiency and fast-growing countries and economies need investment in capacity-building and supply chains that promote energy-efficient designs, low-carbon and sustainable construction.
