Arctic on course for ice-free summer ‘within decades’, scientists say

Overall, the Arctic has lost 40% of its sea-ice cover since 1980, and 75% of its volume. Most scientists believe the ocean at the north pole could be entirely ice-free in the summer by the middle of the century – if not sooner.
